Fresh confabulation

Viva Tropical Bloom

Tropico 3 shows off in-game engine through surprising trailer.

Tropico is heading back to its banana republic roots, with the third release of the game returning focus to your benevolent – oh, who am I kidding – malevolent El Presidente self. For whatever reason, the game’s current sequel, Tropico 2: Pirate Cove, wanders off on a pirate tangent – although, it does offer a more accessible form of gameplay.

Whether Tropico 3 will offer a similar form of play or pull off the tongue-in-cheek humour of the original remains to be seen, but today sees the franchise’s now third developer, Haemimont Games, releasing the first teaser of the Caribbean construction strategy game. Haemimont insists the entire clip was created using the in-game engine. For what is otherwise known as a top-down game, the visuals on display approach that of a modern first-person shooter – even with Lens Flare 2.0.

Perhaps there’s more to this sequel than we’re being told. I, for one, wouldn’t mind walking through the town I built and roughing up the occasional dissenter. In fact, the feature ‘avatar function’ seems to indicate something along these lines – this means you can “Wander the island as El Presidente and change the course of play,” according the the website.

Interestingly, according to publisher Kalypso Media, the game is set for release this September on not only Windows but also the Xbox 360.
