Terminator on Rails

New Terminator: Salvation trailer wears its heart on its sleeve.

It seems there’ll be car chases aplenty in the imminently due Terminator game, although judging from the recently released trailer dubbed ‘rails sequences,’ you probably won’t be driving. Instead, you’ll be manning the guns, blasting down the evil robot onslaught.

Yes, this clearly demonstrates it’ll sit you down to some on-rails gameplay, but before you scream bloody murder, I don’t think that’s necessarily a bad thing. Although a fully-blown rails game doesn’t typically rock my boat, this type of game mechanic can be implemented in a way that compliments the overall experience of a standard shooter, providing the player with a little more variety by changing the pace. The Half-Life titles use it, although to a seemingly lesser extent, but this kind of play can neatly help frame a better story.

Anyway, see below for the clip. It’s certainly still looking rather fetching in that doomed, post-apocalyptic, robot-overlord manner.

Nothing wrong with a good rail-shooter. Ladies & gentlemen of the jury, I present Exhibit A: Die Hard 2.

Additionally, the interchangable-branding WW2 shooters use that particular 'I'll man the guns' technique several times perfectly.

To me, rails suggests that a game isn't trying to overextend but instead focus entirely on one aspect of gameplay, in this case, blowing s*** up. :)
