PopCap puts another of its games into World of Warcraft.

PopCap has long been one of the kings of casual gaming. Through its puzzle titles, Bejeweled and Peggle, it has done much to destroy the productivity of the ‘just one more try’ crowd. Overnight, it extended this evil reach even further, unveiling a World of Warcraft (WoW) mod version of Peggle.

This follows up its release last year of the Bejeweled add-on for WoW, and is a lot more advanced than that relatively simple eater of flight times. Much like the Peggle Nights game included in Valve’s Orange Box, the WoW version of Peggle has 12 themed maps. It also has multiplayer built in, allowing for duels and battles between players. But perhaps its greatest novelty is the inclusion of the /peggleloot command, which gives players the option to have a Peggle shoot-off, rather than roll for loot.

While this is almost undoubtedly not going to take off as an accepted means of loot distribution by the WoW player base, it is yet another fascinating aspect to PopCap’s presence within WoW. Both Peggle and Bejeweled are completely free to download and play. Given recent policy changes by Blizzard designed to stop add-on developers charging for products, this has to happen. But these games aren’t designed to be sold, rather they are designed as a branding exercise for full versions of the games.

World of Warcraft players can get the game running by going to the PopCap website and downloading either or both Peggle and Bejeweled. The downloaded file then needs to be extracted into your WoW folder, under /Interface/Addons. Once extracted, the mod should auto-run when you next log into WoW, offering some pretty straightforward options about when it should show – the best setting is when in flight, giving something to do while waiting to get to your destination. Peggle will save your current level when you land, so you can resume playing on the next flight.
