Not Slaves of Reality

Intriguing new trailer for Zeno Clash brings the crazies, backstory.

The fantastical bizarreness of the single-player, first-person action melee game that is Zeno Clash continues to unfold, today seeing the release of a new trailer from developer ACE Team Software. This time around, we’re treated with introductions to some of the intriguing personalities we’re likely to come up against as the story progresses. It also demonstrates some more gameplay, and it’s looking as curious as ever.

Uncovering the background behind a particular bunch of fruity characters, ACE speaks of the unusual clique known as The Corwid of the Free. Living alone, they lose their minds to the unreal and act on their crazed thoughts. “‘The Corwid of the free’ are a group of insane people that live in the woods, where they will develop their obsessions and manias no matter how impractical or absurd these may be,” it explains. No doubt this is why the extremely exotic outfits.

One is a peculiar chap who felt he needed to be invisible, so he ingeniously plucked out the eyes of anything that could see him. “But why would he do that?” asks your female companion, Deadra. “Why not,” responds Ghat, the open-minded protagonist whose role you assume. There’s also a lass who peed on herself and then starved to death, but we presumably won’t be seeing much of her.

This is the group whom Ghat used to personally associate with, as he, himself, was previously a Corwid. Now, he’s running away, because according to ACE, he did something terrible to them. Whether this involves his hermaphrodite, humanoid, bird beast Father-Mother remains to be seen, as does understanding how he got his mind back in the first place.

From the looks of things, it seems the developer has quite deftly managed to serve a nice, big platter of twisted madness. Going gold on the 21st of April, Zeno Clash is currently available for pre-order on Steam, with a 25 percent discount off the full US$20 price. The game will also be available on Direct2Drive when it’s released.
