Cogs targets custom puzzles, developer bewildered at how some have already completed every achievement.

Cogs can be a head-bangingly, frustrating game. Masochism aside, though, there’s something else about its playful, steampunk puzzles that always draws me back for another quick session. No matter how labyrinthine and alt + F4-esque it becomes, I really do enjoy the way in which it forces you to think.

The game’s creator, Lazy 8 Studios, recently posted an update with what’s in store for the independent title. “I’d like to assure you that the Cogs saga is far from finished,” says lead artist Brendan Mauro, having expressed his pleasure for the warm reception to the game.

In Cogs’s pipeline is the previously promised support for creating your own custom puzzles. Although anyone could theoretically start creating their own puzzles right now, it does need some documentation to explain much of the required syntax, as it requires bashing out raw script in a text editor. “We’ve mentioned in a few places that we’ve included support to make your own custom puzzles,” Mauro confirms, adding that developer Rob Jagnow is “still writing up the documentation but if this is something you’re interested in you can have a look at what he’s got already.”

For those of you curious in perhaps whipping up your own puzzles, you can check out the already fairly detailed, work-in-progress page right here. On the same Wiki, you’ll also find a list of translations which are open for anyone to contribute. Although Lazy 8 Studios is professionally translating the game into the major European languages, anyone else can add their own language of choice, and it seems someone has already begun work on a ‘Lolspeak’ edition.

The game will also be updated with support for a widescreen aspect ratio and anti-aliasing. “These are two of the most requested features and we hope to have them added to the game soon,” explains Mauro.

“I’ve seen a few Steam profiles of people who have managed to complete every achievement,” he continues. “I would like to say ‘you’re insane.’ I don’t even have every achievement and I freaking helped make this thing!”
