First Spore expansion set to launch only two months after release.
We knew that EA would ramp up the monetisation of Spore, but two months after launch could be construed as taking the piss. After briefly popping up on a few game retailers databases over recent weeks, the US$20 Spore: Creepy & Cute Parts Pack appeared on EA’s US online store over the weekend, with a November 18 release date.
It still isn’t on the Australian version of the site, but that doesn’t mean much. The fact EA sold the Creature Creator overseas but distributed it in Australia as a Sunday newspaper freebie shows it is operating a different strategy in Australia. But don’t expect that sort of trend to continue.
For Maxis, pumping out $20 boxes of parts is par for the course. What is really stunning is how quickly it is releasing the first collection of parts for the game. Considering just how many people have criticised the game for its very basic nature (my Sims-expert sister described it to me as an unimpressive kid’s game), one wonders just how much was removed from the initial release in favour of the parts pack.
This is especially important considering that the various creator modes comprise a massive part of the game. We knew the relentless march of expansions wouldn’t be far off, but two months after launch really does cause some worries about what EA plans for Spore.
