Holy Curse Word

Episodic mummy horror, Curse, readies for release.

Curse is an episodic, total-conversion mod for Half-Life 2 and, as we’ve previously discovered, a rather curious first-person horror game based around physics puzzles. Like all too many titles today, it features the living undead, but instead of jumping aboard the current zombie bandwagon, it’s set in an Egyptian necropolis that’s swarming with mummies and other pyramidal nightmares.

As you might expect, you need to lay waste to these abominations, and one of Curse’s more interesting aspects is how the mod handles combat. You’ll wield a rather menacing-looking morning star, but rather than click the mouse button and cycle through maybe several set animations of thwacking, it’s an entirely analogue system. This means you get to waggle your mouse in order to properly slap around those ex-living savages.

Astonishingly, Curse is developed, for the most part, by one chap – Gabor Dosa. The only things he had help with was the audio and weapon programming – everything else is entirely his doing.

Mummy faces the morning star.

Telekinesis is one of your abilities.

We were previously expecting a release of the first episode come the 9th of March, but that’s clearly been pushed back. Thankfully, it hasn’t dropped off the radar, and Dosa has just announced the new launch date as the 18th of May, saying that he’s chosen to release the mod through Fileplanet. Although an anticipated mod, this isn’t a particularly popular idea, judging by the response on Mod DB. “I like file planet as much as getting a pitch fork up my ass,” illustrates one commenter, admirably summarising the views of others.

Along with a release date, he’s shown off the music that will feature in the game. “Curse is getting a full AAA audio treatment,” exclaims Dosa. Produced by Rich Douglas, you can check out some of the polished tracks over on his website. Otherwise, below is the appropriately creepy music that plays while in the main menu.

Like many Source-based mods, you will need to own at least one of these games – and yes, that includes Half-Life 2: Deathmatch. If you haven’t otherwise heard of Curse, you might want to see our previous article on it, featuring a couple of gameplay videos.
