Great Balls of Fire Redux

Sony is recalling 100,000 OEM notebook batteries due to overheating.

Break out the asbestos undies, ‘cause Sony is recalling notebook batteries again. This time around it is only 100,000 of the suckers, but the obvious worry is that, like last time this happened, the trickle will turn into a flood. By the end of its last ‘batteries blowing up’ scandal, Sony had recalled eight million notebook batteries.

While there is no indication that any Australian-sold notebooks are being recalled, one would be surprised if we were totally unaffected by these events. This new recall affects US and European notebook models by Dell, HP, and Toshiba that use an OEM batch of Sony batteries manufactured between October 2004 and June 2005. More details can be found on this CNET blog post, which outlines the situation and names the following models as being affected by the issue.

Affected models include: HP Pavilion dv1000, dv8000, and zd8000, Compaq Presario v2000 and v2400, and HP Compaq nc6110, nc6120, nc6140, nc6220, nc6230, nx4800, nx4820, nx6110, nx6120, nx9600; Toshiba Satellite A70/A75, P30/P5, M30X/M35X, and M50/M55; and Dell Latitude 110L, Inspiron 1100, 1150, 5100, 5150, and 5160.

You can find links to your notebook manufacturer’s website in the CNET story if you think you are affected by this recall.
