First trailer released for Obsidian's anticipated spy RPG.
It is amazing that after so many years of gaming we still see the RPG genre flutter about the realms of fantasy. Breaking out from this Dungeons and Dragons-inspired focus happens all too rarely, but when done right, it makes us wonder why more developers don’t choose an alternate setting for RPGs.
Obsidian, the veteran developer best known for Knights of the Old Republic II, has historically done just that. While a shadow hangs over the company’s Aliens RPG, which may or may not have been canceled by Sega, the long awaited spy RPG, Alpha Protocol, is finally peeking out from cover.
This first video for the game shows very little RPG and a lot of ZOMG third-person action. From what we know, the game will indeed have a lot of third-person combat, with skills influencing it appropriately. It seems that the focus of the RPG aspects will be upon conversation, using ‘stances’ to influence how one talks, rather than incessantly scrolling through dialogue options.
However, the trailer is worrying, making the game look like a mediocre shooter. This writer hopes that Obsidian gets some more RPG-focused footage out sooner rather than later. With such a refreshingly different premise for Alpha Protocol, it would be a shame if it ended up as an action game with sassy dialogue.
