A Peek at Modern Warfare 2

US advertisement shows the first actual gameplay from the next Call of Duty game.

Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was one of the most beloved cross-platform games of recent years. It’s popularity not only jumped the console/PC divide, but its multiplayer has nurtured strong communities on all platforms. So, it is safe to say that Modern Warfare 2 is one of this year’s most highly anticipated games.

Not that we’ve seen much of it. The only trailer for the game can be found on the official website, and was unveiled at this year’s Game Developer Choice Awards. Unfortunately, that trailer showed no actual gameplay, instead delivering a fuzzy, stylised depiction of what could be guys tooling up, traveling in an elevator and blowing something up. In the time since it was first unveiled, the website version of the trailer has become a lot clearer, but it still lacks gameplay.

Over the weekend, the first real footage of the game appeared in a most unlikely fashion. Shown during a basketball game in the US was this advertisement, which gives a brief look at what the game has in store for us.

Beginning with a helicopter assault, the trailer shows action at a Soviet-era airbase (judging from the Su-27 fighters and Hind gunships), switches to deployment from a submersible, throws in some snowmobile action, and finishes with what looks like the sequel’s answer to the famed AC-130 gunship mission. This last scene is through the TV camera of a Hellfire missile, which indicates that maybe this time we get to play in some kind of helicopter gunship.

There is more footage promised on the 24th of May during the NBA’s Eastern Conference Finals. Activision calls this a ‘world premiere’ in the advertisement, which poses the question of just how many times a publisher can effectively re-premiere the same game.
